Why don't we do the things that would so simply solve our problems (or at least make them rationally manageable)? Why do we seem to hunger for pain and struggle? Jung talked about 'low-level spiritual quests' in people who have no formal religion, no god to hang their hopes on; we create disasters in our lives in order to feel something and ultimately experience redemption. This need for redemption - is it just a part of being human that we can't escape?
